Category: Teens-Responsibility & Independence
Growing Independence
Help teens identify skills needed for adulthood. Workshop exercises: 1) Rate yourself 1-5 on cooking, laundry, scheduling, transportation planning, communication, and money basics. 2) Choose one skill to improve. 3) Ask someone to teach or coach you. 4) Practice independently.
Independence develops gradually and should reflect ability, age, culture, and family circumstances.
Keeping Commitments
Strengthen reliability. Workshop exercises: 1) List your current commitments. 2) Mark each as complete, on track, late, or unrealistic. 3) Renegotiate one commitment if needed. 4) Complete one promised action today.
Teach that responsible people sometimes need to renegotiate rather than silently fail.
Time Ownership
Help teens use time intentionally. Workshop exercises: 1) Track one weekday in 30-minute blocks. 2) Identify required, valuable, wasted, and restorative time. 3) Choose one adjustment. 4) Create a simple plan for tomorrow.
Avoid treating rest as wasted time. Healthy development requires sleep, recreation, relationships, and unstructured time.
