Naming What I Feel

Increase emotional vocabulary and reduce blame. Workshop exercises: Each spouse chooses three feelings experienced this week; connect each feeling to an event and need; share without blaming; listener validates.

Feelings are information, not accusations. Discourage phrases that disguise judgments as feelings.

Sharing the Heart

Build emotional intimacy through safe vulnerability. Workshop exercises: Complete: ‘Something I have been carrying is…’; listener reflects; speaker shares what support would help; close with appreciation or prayer.

Vulnerability grows when disclosures are not mocked, dismissed, preached at, or used later as weapons.

Validation Without Agreement

Learn to acknowledge a spouse’s experience while retaining a different viewpoint. Workshop exercises: Discuss a mild disagreement; each spouse says what makes sense about the other’s perspective; then state their own view; identify shared ground.

Validation means ‘I can understand how you got there,’ not ‘you are completely right.’

Responding to Tears, Anger, and Silence

Improve responses to strong emotions. Workshop exercises: Identify how each spouse typically reacts to strong emotion; discuss what helps and hurts; create a preferred support plan; role-play one scenario.

Do not force immediate discussion when someone is flooded. Strong emotion does not justify intimidation or harmful behavior.

Emotional Check-In

Create a simple recurring conversation about inner life. Workshop exercises: Rate stress, connection, joy, and discouragement from 1-10; share one high and one low; ask one caring question; pray for one another.

Keep check-ins short and regular. The goal is connection, not interrogation.
